How to calculate tile
- Multiply the length × width of the area in feet to get square feet.
- Add 10% for straight layouts or 15% for diagonal and herringbone patterns.
- Find one tile’s area: length × width in inches ÷ 144.
- Divide the total area by one tile’s area to get the number of tiles.
- Divide the total area by the sq ft per box (printed on the box) and round up.

How much extra tile should I buy?
Buy 10% extra for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal or herringbone. Keep a few spare tiles after the job: matching the same dye lot later is often impossible.
Does grout spacing change how many tiles I need?
Slightly, but the difference is small and is covered by the waste allowance.
