How to calculate gravel
- Multiply length × width in feet to get square feet.
- Multiply by the depth in inches and divide by 12 to get cubic feet.
- Divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
- Multiply cubic yards by about 1.4 to estimate tons (heavier stone can run 1.5).
- Add about 10% so you have enough after compaction.

How much does a yard of gravel weigh?
Most crushed stone and gravel weighs about 1.4 tons (2,800 lb) per cubic yard. Pea gravel and river rock can be slightly lighter or heavier.
How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
A typical gravel driveway needs 4–6 inches of stone. A 12 × 50 ft driveway at 4 inches takes about 7.4 cubic yards, or roughly 10.4 tons.
