How to calculate mulch
- Measure the bed length and width in feet and multiply to get square feet.
- Multiply by the depth in inches, then divide by 12 to get cubic feet.
- Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards (bulk mulch is sold by the yard).
- For bags, divide cubic feet by the bag size (usually 2 or 3 cu ft).

How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is ideal for most beds. Deeper mulch can suffocate roots and hold too much moisture against plant stems.
How many bags of mulch are in a yard?
About 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft, or 9 bags of 3 cu ft, make one cubic yard.
